Deconstructed in Fine Woodworking Magazine!

Posted on 04/7/16 by Jessica

Very honored to have our Cedar Garden Bench featured in Fine Woodworking magazine (June 2016)! We originally designed and built a series of these outdoor benches in Port Orford Cedar for the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, NY. The design caught the eye of one of the editors at Fine Woodworking and they commissioned us to discuss and demonstrate the construction of the piece. What a thrill to be seen in such esteemed company…!

Beacon Japan Tool Study Group

Posted on 08/23/14 by Jessica

Over the past six months we have had the privilege of hosting the Beacon Japanese Tool Study Group in our studio on occasional Sundays… It is an ongoing exploration of the mysteries and incredible properties of the kanna, the Japanese hand plane and the other tools that support it - chisels, saws and marking devices. We turn off our cell phones, put the waterstones in to soak and practice, practice, practice under the expert and guiding eye of Yann Giguere. Yann owns and operates Mokuchi, a very special Japanese woodworking school of sorts out of his studio in Brooklyn. We are so lucky that he is able to make the trip to Beacon to work with us.

GreenSource: Garrison Residence

We worked with interior designer Elizabeth Strianese for almost a year on this exquisite residence in Garrison, New York. All credit to her adventuresome eye and the client’s admiration of the organic, modern design aesthetic of Russel Wright (whose house is just up the road…). Our pieces - including the sliding glass door cabinet, the black locust “fold” foyer table, the back lit vellum closet and cabinet doors and the sliding bronze hook coat rack - are in great company here. Almost all of the custom work on the project was done by local artisans. GreenSource published a feature about the project in May 2013. Photography by Meredith Heuer.
